Rebuilding Lives for those tortured, persecuted or displaced by war
Transforming Humanitarian Assistance: Dr. Hawthorne “Hawk” Smith and the Bellevue/NYU Program for Survivors of Torture

Inspiring Leaders
Dr. Hawthorne “Hawk” Smith is another one of our Pathfinders, and a licensed psychologist and the Director of the Bellevue/NYU Program for Survivors of Torture (PSOT). The Program for Survivors of Torture rebuilds the bodies, minds, and spirits of people who have been tortured or persecuted. Many survivors endure horrific suffering and overcome massive obstacles to get to New York City. But when they arrive, they need help. As the Director, Hawk not only has clinical duties and facilitates support groups, he also speaks extensively about the importance of providing clinical services for survivors of socio-political violence, and enhancing cross-cultural clinical skills among therapeutic service providers. Dr. Smith has been recognized for his valuable work through awards such as the Robin Hood Foundation’s “Hero Award” and many more. He is also a professional musician (saxophonist and vocalist with Casa Mantequilla) with national and international experience.
